Important information concerning NHC sailing program
Summer 2011
Once again this summer we are teaming up with the NHRS to
offer sailing instruction for our juniors. The Board
explored a number of options and after much consideration
decided to offer a more structured program, which will
provide better safety and sailing skill development for our
juniors. Jason Maxwell, a qualified sailing
instructor, who was hired jointly by our club and NHRS last
year will be returning.
Children will have the opportunity to follow Canadian
Yachting Association courses: White Sails I, II and III.
Jason will be assisted by an NHRS staff member for the
morning and afternoon sessions. Each lesson will include
a maximum of 14 participants - 7 from each club.
Other details:
Participants must be a minimum of 8 years of age and have
completed Red Cross Level 7 swimming.
Starting July 4th, lessons will be offered Monday-Thursday
morning (9:00-12:00) and afternoon (1:00-4:00). Please see
table below for details regarding when each level will be
offered (subject to change based on demand). Each level
requires 2 weeks to complete, a total of 24 hours of sailing
instruction.
Participants are expected to make a commitment to attend all
classes, and please note that the first 2 classes of each
session are mandatory for the continuation of the Level
(safety instruction).
Lessons will depart from the NHRS docks in July. A club
staff member will depart our club at 12:45 each lesson day,
and will accompany the children to NHRS. Children
participating in the morning lesson will be asked to arrive
at NHRS at 9:00.
Parents are asked to sign their children up at the club. If
you would like to reserve a spot prior to club opening,
please send an e-mail to
madillj@sympatico.ca with name
of child, age, swim level, desired sailing level course and
date. If there is room, adults will be able to enroll in the
lessons.
The program this year requires more of a commitment, and we
are confident that the quality of teaching and learning will
be worth it. We hope to continue to invest in and improve
the condition of our boats. Moving forward, we would like to
build capacity to run the sailing program with our own
fleet.
