The first day of summer, also known as The Summer Solstice, or the longest day of the year and the shortest night.  It is a perfect North Hatley day with a gentle breeze and blue sky and sunshine.

The photo above shows something we haven't seen for quite awhile.  The glow in the sky over our club is known as the "sun" and at this time of the year it rises over Lake Massawippi at approximately 4:57AM.  The forecast is for "clear" with a trace of rain.  The golf course is soggy at best but very green.

The water is receding slowly leaving behind the detritus of flood waters on a lake with a shoreline littered with logs and branches.  It was noted recently that the local family of beavers has a good supply of rich juicy tree branches.  As the waters rose, the beaver ventured farther ashore.  The sweet taste of soft wood pictured left.

It rained harder than we have ever seen yesterday and the lake came up very fast.  Docks are now under water, Dreamland Park benches are sitting in water, and the chairs on the porch at The Pilsen are floating.  This morning's walk found folks beginning to talk of going in search of the sun south of the border.  Have faith, the sun will shine again.  In the meantime, a fire, a good book and good friends will help pass the time.

Here are some more views of the water level.

If you are in North Hatley and want a fun night out, take in the spring musical at Bishop's University.  One of the best and most entertaining interpretations of Shakespeare ever seen. Here is the information:

is the 158th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar (159th in leap years), there are 207 days remaining, but wait, only 199 shopping days till ????  Found an interesting link to information about what happened on a certain date in history, click on the date above and see what it has to say about today.  It is looking like rain again.  We had two glorious days here, mid 80's yesterday, and things started to dry out.  Please click on the Chat button and start sharing your comments with us.  Suggest topics for discussion, tell us what's on your mind.  We want to hear from you!  Opening Tea is only four (4) weeks away!

If you know of anyone who would like to rent a cottage, or if you have a cottage to rent, let Louise Moses know 819-842-2142.  The Quebec Lodge Cottage still has a couple of weeks available.  In addition, there are other houses available in North Hatley.  Click here for the QL Cottage.

The lower tennis courts will be available for play (weather permitting!) soon.  The daily schedule is almost the same as last year, except the courts will remain open later in the day, through July 15.

8 a.m. -12:30 pm open for play

12:30 – 2 pm closed for maintenance

2 –7 pm open for play

Gentlemen’s round robins on Saturdays at 8 am; Ladies’ on Mondays.

Again this year we will require players to drag and brush the courts when they have finished their court time, including when other players are waiting to play. This way we can keep the courts in top shape and everyone will be able to play on a freshly maintained playing surface. Thanks for respecting this requirement.

May 25, 2006

It is 5:00 PM and the sun is finally shining after 12 days.  All signs are good for the weekend with perhaps a little rain tomorrow.  Maybe now the tennis courts can be prepared.  The lake is very high.  As I walked by The Pilsen, the outside porch was under water "again" and the few docks that had been put in were being held down by ropes and rocks.  Ah, spring!

May 22, 2006

As one of my good friends recently said, "this is more like November than May".  We are cold today, it is 41F degrees.  No change to the above picture, it still looks the same.  There is hope in the future though, by the weekend it should be warming up quite a bit.  If any of you know of a person who would like to rent a cottage this summer there is a gorgeous one for rent down at Quebec Lodge.  www.quebeclodge.com/cottage.htm  A very energetic group of folks has just spent a week putting it together.  A true community effort.  All the funds generated from the rental will go towards the Re-imagine Quebec Lodge initiative.  Even if "the sun don't shine" - the fireplace there will warm anyone's heart!

May 16, 2006

Tennis News --- Len Barrett and Paul Caron report that the Lower Courts are now being prepared and may be available for play as soon as the May 20 long weekend, weather permitting. The Upper Courts will be opened later in June. We are prioritizing the Lower Courts to take advantage of their better water supply and hence easier maintenance.

During the period when only the Lower Courts are open, Round Robins will be held there – ladies on Mondays, gentlemen on Saturdays.

Later on, tennis lovers will be able to get more tennis during the period June 1 – July 15, when courts will be kept open until 7 pm thanks to the nice late sunsets.

May 15, 2006

It is cloudy and gray outside and the lake is acting as if it expects rain.  According to the weather network, see the button below, we should expect rain for the next couple of days.  Nothing like what our friends to the south and east of us are experiencing!  If you have suggestions of what you might like to see on this page or on the website, please click the email button above.  We would love to hear from you.

Cottages are coming to life again after one of the mildest winters on record.  The ice went out on the lake between 2:15 PM and 4:30 PM on April 12th after taking until mid-February to freeze.  The ice fishermen said that it was approximately 10 inches thick so safe enough for them to walk on.  We didn't see very many people walking on the ice at all.  Would you?

The boards are still on the club but there is activity as we get ready to open for another Hatley summer.  Today work began on the upper courts so it would appear that some tennis might be played in the not too distant future.

Cheers from the porch!
